This interesting sterling silver medal features an image of the Holy Child of Atocha (El Santo Nino de Atocha). The devotion to the Holy Child of Atocha began after a battle in Spain where Christians were held captive and were not allowed visits from adults to bring food and water. The Christians began to pray and in answer to the prayers, a small child appeared and was allowed to bring food and water to the captives.
Nobody knew who the child was. Eventually, they recognized that the child was Jesus.
The original statue of the Holy Child of Atocha was imported from Spain and now resides in Mexico in the town of Fresnillo.
This medal measures approximately 7/8 inch (22 mm) long by 3/4 inch (19 mm) wide (not including bail and tag).
